大館. 青森: Tough Week

This week was a grinder, no doubt about that.

After p-day ended and by then it is time for the sun and all the lights to go out, so it makes it very hard to do anything here in Odate.  We trying to visit some old Q'S and less actives.  And of course they are either dead, the building doesn't exist, or not home.  So we just went around and posted all that we could.  By the way it was the coldest day by far.

Tuesday was a busy day.  We went streeting around a local school and as we are walking kids are talking to us for the first time in forever.  They are saying that they have a Book of Mormon and sometimes two of them.  Apparently past missionaries have given all these kids a book.

Literally by running up and down the street giving them out like candy. We ask if they read it and they said a little because it is so difficult to read in Japanese.  Nobody gets the concept of the Book of Mormon, let alone God.  But we got 5 follow ups in 5 minutes.  Then we found another kid walking around, we stopped him and talked for quite some time and gave him a book.  He said that he has seen the missionaries before but didn't talk to them cause they were on bikes.  But we talked with the kid for a long while and found out that he knows more about Christianity and God than most people we talk to.  Also we got a new Q through the free family English program, 30 minutes English and 30 minutes gospel.  Oh and he is as tall as me and he plays basketball so hopefully we can apply the gospel to ball. 

I wanted to share the story from ZTM on Friday.  The sister training leaders compared the experience of receiving mission calls here on earth to us receiving our calls in heaven.  They said that just like on earth, there is a mission call season in heaven that we all went through.  In heaven as we received our calls to the earth and serve our missions for Heaven Father, all of our friends gathered round us to know where we are going.  Just like on earth, we were very grateful for the opportunity.  Everyone is on the edge of there seats wondering where they will go.  I pull out my paper and read that I am going to Bountiful Utah to a family that knows Christ and is happy in the gospel.  Everyone rejoices to the fact that I will have a knowledge and love of the gospel when I am on the earth.  Time passes by and lots of other friends are receiving their calls and they are going to places like New York, Japan, Mexico, etc.  All to places that are filled with the gospel.  Everyone rejoices.  But we all know that not everyone was sent to these same conditions.  Our heaven friends opened their calls with everyone gathered around and our friend read "Sendai Japan" to a family who didn't know the gospel.  Everyone became silent and very sorrowful for our beloved friend that wouldn't know the gospel.  But then everyone gathered around our sad friend and said that, "There is no worry, I will find you my friend".   I will be honest I wanted to cry, I know without a doubt that we are trying everyday to find our eternal friends.  Not only that, but the people we work with are also eternal friends like ward members, branch members, investigators, and comps.  When I left Izumi I was very sad at the fact that I might not see those wonderful people again but it's been soothing to know that if I never have the chance to go back to Izumi that I will see all of them in heaven one day.

It also helped me recommit to opening my mouth and finding those people that are eternal friends that haven't been rescued yet.  This doesn't only apply to missionaries, but to all of us.

Take advantage of the daily missionary work that you can do!  Remember the saying, "Every member a missionary".   We are on the eternal timetable  so keep trying, always searching and always improving.

February 29, 2016 大館 Week 2

This week was one of the rougher ones thus far in the mission.  After I finished emailing last week, Elder Taneda and I were out trying to find and visit old Q'S around close to where we live.  Not a soul to be found...  Either moved or not home!  It's ok, it's the usual around here.  Never very many people out on the streets during the day!  When the sun goes down, it's like the whole city turns into a ghost town!  No lights and hardly any people.  It's like Bear Lake at night.  Cold nothing around, really cool actually!

Tuesday we tried to have two lessons with investigators that are showing little to no progression.  The first investigator was battling with us saying that he can't come to church because he doesn't own a suit.  He tried to explain to the guy that it's ok if you don't have a suit.  It's written in the pamphlet to make sure that when people show up to church they aren't wearing anything crazy like a feather hat.  Weird because he loves talking with us and then he fights us on the message we share, then invites us back.  Saying the same thing over again and answering a question and then he comes up with another dumb excuse.  Same with the next investigator we visited.  He loves talking and has a baptism date BUT....  The date is for this week and he completely forgot all about it.  He can't be baptized because he has to come to church 3 straight weeks and that hasn’t happened and then there is the fact he smokes.  I wasn't here when they set the baptismal date, so I think that will be postponed for a while.  He also loves talking to us and the feeling he gets hearing a message.  YEAH INVESTIGATORS RIGHT??   Fun but frustrating.  Oh yeah it snowed all day too and for the 3rd day in a row!

Wednesday is FHE, investigator lesson, and a less active!

First of all the less active.  He is like our investigator from the day before.  He is really stubborn, he owns a little shop on the corner of a street and every time we meet he always comes up with some sorts of lame excuse of why he is busy.   Today when we tried to visit he said that he was too busy to talk, when in reality I could see him watching TV in the back room.  YAY LESS ACTIVES!  I think by the end of this week as a companionship we have been really good at beating dead horses.  I’m joking.  Next we had FHE with a member, the other male member besides the branch president!  It was really fun!  Played cards shared a nice message!  Good time!   Finally a lesson with an investigator that shows serious promise to be baptized!!!!  YAY INVESTIGATORS!!  But there is a problem.  He is moving to Tokyo for school at the end of the month...and he can't come to church because he has work on Sunday.  But he said that he is wants to meet with missionaries in Tokyo!

Thursday was an all-day travel day to Morioka for a special conference .... 7 hours of train rides.  Nobody on the train either!!!

Friday was a conference was given by Elder Choi who is a member of the area presidency (the Asia north area). He is from Korea!  One of the best things I learned from him was just to open your mouth.  When you do, the spirit can testify to the people.  He gave an example of himself!  English is his second language.  He gave the entire training in English.  He said that "my English is not perfect' I make mistakes right!?!"  He made all of us agree with him.  Ha Ha   Then he goes on to say "but you can understand what I am telling you and the spirit is feeling you truths that I am teaching!"  "so just open your mouth, it doesn't matter if you mess up, I am messing up right now!" "Don't waste your time being afraid of the mistakes, use your time the best you can!  Use all your time serving the Lord!   Last thing I want to share from him, he said he learned English on his mission for the kingdom of God!  To benefit the kingdom he needed to learn English!!

And that punched me right in the face how true that was!  I want to be fluent in Japanese, I want to be good!  However, I did lose track of the fact that I am learning Japanese for the kingdom of God!  After that it really lifted all my stress that I had been experiencing over the last few days!  I can't explain it but it just gave me a boost to get going in the work and try that little bit harder!  What a great day!

Saturday is weekly planning and eikaiwa. That really is all that was Saturday those two things!

Sunday was Progress!  We had a member move into the branch from Sapporo and the attendance at church was up to 16!  And we handed out 3 Books of Mormon to the 4 people we saw on the street!!  Whooyo!!

February 22, 2016: First Week in Odate!

Hello everyone it's a nice zero degrees Celsius here in Odate!  The nice constant wind really caps of my first week in Odate!  (ha ha)  All jokes aside; I really do love it here!  It's a nice break and I feel like there isn't a lot of noise here in this small town.  It is nothing like Izumi where it was constantly busy and there were people walking around all the time.  It reminds me of some parts of Utah.  It's all covered in snow and quiet which really reminds me of that feeling I got back home.  I guess that I have been in Japan long enough to consider it home. 

So my first day here in Odate we went around trying to visit old Q'S and we couldn't meet with any of them.  By the way it took all day because they all live really far away from each other and the area boundary here is huge!  So we were walking around all day and finally headed back to the church to have Eikaiwa.  We get there, set up and wait for it to start. We wait an extra 10 minutes and nobody had come!  I was like, yay Odate fun fun!   After a while one person came out of the blue!!  Yay party!  Really fun activity and really fun day over all!

The following day we had 3 lessons!  One with a guy who has a baptism date but we really don't know if he has real interest or not.  He loves to talk with the missionaries and he also smokes like a chimney!  So most of my cloths smelled like smoke.  Oh by the way my boots hadn't arrived by that time so I was wearing my regular beat up shoes.  Water has gotten in my shoes everyday... So yea I guess you can say I am living the dream!!! My shoes probably will die at the end of this transfer but we are good!

I have been nothing but tired this entire week!  It's really draining to listen as hard as I can to Japanese, think in Japanese, and be walking around everywhere in the snow!  I couple times this week I have fallen asleep while trying to say my nightly prayers.   Funny right!  We also got a good lesson with an investigator that is showing great promise but might be moving to Tokyo in the next month.  Why???  He has read the entire bible and likes it and intends to read all of the Book of Mormon!  Yay. Oh by the way we went to go visit another investigator.  He answered the door in his underwear!  So that was pretty cool!

Elder Taneda and I almost got the standard accomplished in the 5 days we were working here in Odate!  It was a really fun week.  Oh I want to tell you about church!  At church there were a total of 13 people with 4 missionaries were included in that number!  I blessed the sacrament and the branch president passed the sacrament to all the people present.  It reminds me of a story from a member in Izumi.  She tells about when she was a brand new member and the missionaries ran everything in the branch.  It also reminds me of D&C 64:33 “Wherefore, be not weary in well-doing, for ye are laying the foundation of a great work.  And out of small things proceedeth that which is great.”   Japan is teaching me a lot about the small things that need to be done before the big miracles everyone loves to talk about. I guarantee you that in the future when talking about growth of the church and missionary work, they will talk about miracles in Japan and how it is exploding with the work!  But before that, the small things need to be done.  All the missionaries in Japan are doing that right now!  Doing the small and simple things!

February 15, 2016 Transfers! ODATE

So yesterday I got my transfer call.  I am getting transferred to a place called ODATE, it's in the 青森  zone.  It is a branch that has around 9 members, my companion and I will be 2 of the 3 priesthood  

holders in the branch. The other is the branch president.   I will become the 2nd councilor in the branch presidency.  I am really excited, I believe it will be a great learning experience and I will be speaking a lot of Japanese there!  So please pray for me!  My new comp is from Japan...my first Nihongi companion.

Other than the weirdness at church, the week was really fun!  We had a record for lessons, we got 12 lessons this past week!  And a lot of Book of Mormon handouts which is always great!

Splits with Elder Larson

 A really cool experience I had this week is when I was on a split with Elder Larson.  Before we went out for the day he said "Let's go make it fun.  Let's put on a smile and have fun". After he said that, the day we had was really a good one!  We had a mogi lesson with a member that day and it was awesome.  Even though I was making mistakes it was alright because I was having fun with it!  It was so much fun to go on the split with him!  It reminded me of when I was in the MTC and my teacher said that if you feel good going into a lesson, you will have the spirit!  Just be happy, put on a smile and it will all be good and fun!

February 8, 2016 - 3rd Transfer Week 5

It was a little of a bummer week.

On Monday we had all that fun P-day stuff and I am sorry mom I was busy and couldn't email.  Monday was probably the most successful day of the week.  We went streeting in front of a shopping mall here in Izumi.  We were able to pass out 2 Books of Mormon in the time that we were there.   I was really fun and really cold at the same time.   I realized that we as missionaries can almost accomplish anything.  I was thinking back before my mission and I really don't think I could have learned a hard language or woken up at 6:30 or earlier every single day.  It really is true the promise in 1 Nephi 3:7  "...I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded for I know that the Lord giveth no commands unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way.."  It is true in the mission field.

Tuesday we had zero success.  Since we recently dropped 2 of the 3 investigators we have been focusing hard on finding new investigators and trying to pick up new, old ones as well.  But all day, either streeting or visiting old Q's, they said either kekko, keare, moved, or dead.   So thus far in the week we had zero going for us.  It was a very difficult day to say the least.

Wednesday was more of the usual, we walked around Izumi trying to find a single soul to make contact with, but as usual we didn't find anybody.  But we did have Eikaiwa which is where people come to the church and learn free English.  It's always a blast!!  Izumi has the best Eikaiwa.  The secret to teaching Eikaiwa is just be genki as you possibly can and people will feed off of it.  Wednesday was the funniest day of the whole week.

Thursday was the most successful day of the week.  We were able to meet with two of the less actives.   Earlier in the day I made a goal to focus on the spirit and be a true disciple of Christ.  Usually when we meet one of the less actives, I have zero idea what they are saying.  During one of the visits I was getting really frustrated that I couldn't understand anything (btw he doesn't have any teeth, so literally I can't understand a thing),  but I remembered my goal for the day.  I then had the words to speak and words to teach the restored gospel.  It was an incredible testimony builder that even though I don't understand everything that they are saying I have the best secret weapon (sacred weapon) the Holy Ghost and all of its many and wonderful blessing and gifts.

 My comp became really ill Friday to Sunday and we had to stay in the apartment all day.  But it's all good because I got to watch the Testaments video about 15 times :). Almost got it memorized in Japanese now.  :)

January 25, 2016 - Nothing but Walking

Working with a new investigator

The snow keeps falling and we keep walking.  It’s ok because I've missed the snow and occasionally we take the bus. 

First thing.  It is the importance of being yourself and have fun!  I got an email from a neighbor concerning his mission and how once he decided to be himself, he started to have so much fun and not by accident was having more success at the same time.  Like his email said, I have come to realize that those two things really do go hand in hand.  I fell into the trap of becoming a homogeneous elder when I came out of the MTC.  The MTC isn't a factory people!  When we are called to be missionaries, we aren't supposed to be the same.  The Lord has blessed us with talents, skills, etc. that are unique to each of us.  We are called as representatives of Him and He has given us special talents to further the work, to reap the field all white ready to harvest.  When we are not being ourselves, we are burying our talents like in Matthew 25.   I have been called to strive to become perfectly obedient  Halverson ハルバソン長老, not like any other elder.  Again can't stress it enough!  You are called to a specific mission for a specific reason because of your specific talents abilities.  My biggest onagai to all of you is just be yourself in all aspects of life!!  Matthew 25 doesn't just apply to missionaries but everyone as well!!  Whether it be at school, work or whatever, just be yourself!!!

I am also impressed to write about the small and little things.  There was a story that was from one of our APs.  When he was a zone leader in Aomori, they as a zone leader companionship set a goal to get one baptism before the end of the transfer.  They didn't see one the entire transfer, but right before the end of the transfer they passed a Book of Mormon to a man from Nepal.  After two transfers had passed he became AP and as APs they go to every baptism meeting and when they went to one in Kamisugi, he realized the guy getting baptized was the guy that he passed a Book of Mormon to in Aomori.  During that time, the investigator read the Book of Mormon and decided that he NEEDED to join this church.  He found the elders in Kamisugi and was baptized in 2 months!!  Like the verse in Alma, “By the small and simple things are great things come to pass!”  Remember you are all doing greater good than you think you are!!  We can get caught up in the big picture and forget that it is the little things that are equally as important.

We continue to work and find people to teach and opportunities to serve.  We are focusing on the small and little things we can do to help people feel the spirit of the restored gospel.
